Section 504

In some cases, a special education evaluation team may determine that a child does not meet criteria to qualify for special education services under one or more of the 12 categories. Sometimes, students still require select aids and services which may instead fall under Section 504, commonly called "504 Plans".

What is a 504 Plan?

504 plans are for students with disabilities who need some adjustments to the learning environment (called accommodations) to help them meet their needs in the classroom. This is different from an IEP, or Individualized Instruction Plan, which includes specialized instruction to help children learn the material.

Environment

Makes changes to the learning environment in order to offer a child equal access to curriculum and activities, like seating near the teacher or a calming space. Students may receive extra breaks from the classroom.

Extra Time

A 504 plan may offer extended time for test-taking or work completion.

Adaptive Tools

Some potential adaptations include using iPads with communication software, the use of noise-canceling headphones, the use of a recorder during instruction, wobble chairs, or fidgets/preferred calming tools.

Support

In some cases, students may also qualify for additional support in the access to a classroom aide, or assistance during after school activities.
