What is the difference between a medical diagnosis versus an educational diagnosis?
While a medical evaluation aims to diagnose and understand the medical condition or developmental disability, special education eligibility determines if a child qualifies for educational support and services in the school setting.
How long does an evaluation take?
From the date of the official receipt of referral for special education, in most cases, schools have 60 days to complete their evaluation. Children who qualify for an IEP undergo reevaluation at least every three years.
What is the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan?
Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and a 504 plans are both designed to ensure that students with disabilities receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE). However, they differ in their focus and eligibility:
IEP
Focuses on educational benefits and specialized instruction for students with specific disabilities that affect their ability to learn. IEPs may include services such as speech or occupational therapy, adaptive physical education, and working with an education specialist. Students are eligible for an IEP if they meet criteria for one or more of the disabilities listed in IDEA. IEPs are reviewed annually.
504 plan
Focuses on ensuring that students have equitable access to learning environments, and may be appropriate for students who don't need specialized instruction. 504 plans can include modifications, accommodations, or changes to programs, facilities, or testing. They typically cover a broader range of disabilities and impairments than IEPs, including attention deficit disorders. Unlike IEPs, there is no list of specific conditions that qualify for a 504 plan.
